Megan of Going Crunchy Not Crazy on staying healthy while traveling

How She Became Going Crunchy Not Crazy

When she was about 22 she got very sick and couldn’t figure out why. So she went to nursing school to help her on her path to figuring it out. Then one doctor from India gave her some herbs to try. It changed her life. She realized that they actually helped her pain more than the pain meds she had been given in the past.

So she continued to research more about herbs and diets and the more she changed in her life, the less pain she was in. She became curious why this was happening so she went to the research and found research article after research article about plastics and food and wanted to use this information to help others! And now she helps you go through your home and identify all the aspects of your home to help your family be healthier.

How to Stay Healthy While Traveling

The Let Down Effect

If you are a person who has significant stress before a trip or lack of sleep then you’re more likely to get sick during a trip. This is a legit scientifically documented phenomena, it’s not just your imagination! Basically, once you relax your immune system takes over. So here are some tips to help prevent the let down effect.

  • Relax and de-stress before your trip
  • Elderberry (ginseng and such isn’t scientifically backed, but elderberry is)
  • Increase Vitamin C

Protecting Against Germs While Traveling

Planes are some of the germiest places in the world. In fact, an airplane bathroom is cleaner than your seat and armrest. So she has a couple of ideas to help protect you and your family from these germs including a double-sided blanket, and an atomized silver spray!

Healthy Food While Traveling

As someone who will develop pain if she eats the wrong foods and because she’s concerned about not having enough food for her kids, she often brings her own carry-on filled with food! You don’t want to be forced to be in an unhealthy eating situation so be prepared. Things you might find in her suitcase are:

  • Single-serve hummus
  • Pita chips
  • Organic jerky (mushroom, beef, turkey)
  • Single-serve avocado
  • Hard-boiled eggs
  • Fruits and veggies
  • Nut butters
  • Fruit and veggie chips
  • Granola
  • Individually packed bone broth
  • Dried seaweed snacks

Managing the Picky Eaters

As a former picky eater, she has some tips for everyone. From starting when their kids were babies with baby led weaning to putting foods on her own plate so they’re more interested in eating it. We all know how kids want your food more than theirs! She also recommends trying dehydrated fruits and veggies because then it appears more as a chip and many kids love the crunch of them.

Be Over Prepared For Potential Set-Backs

You don’t want to be stuck at the airport or in the middle of the trail and be forced to be unhealthy or unsafe. You also want to be prepared with all your medical info and medications, as well as back-ups, prescriptions, and extended travel insurance.

How to Manage Sickness While Traveling

Make sure you get help and don’t wait. Being sick while you’re traveling isn’t the same as when you’re home. You don’t want to get stuck on a boat or plane and get worse and need a hospital but can’t get one. And you don’t want to get others sick. So make sure you have traveler’s insurance and ask for references of where to go to get seen. If you don’t know who to ask, as your hotel info desk or even call your consulate.
